Hailing from the burgeoning instrumental scene in Kent, home to Yndi Halda, Bossk and upCdownC…, UK five piece Codes in the Clouds like to make post-rock in it’s purest form. Having already played to great acclaim in Germany, they now look to bring their heady mix of the quiet/loud dynamic around the UK, in support of the double a-side single Distant Street Lights/Fractures, released as a limited edition white vinyl this August through Erased Tapes Records.
While not exactly pushing the boundaries of post-rock to its very breaking point, what CITC do, they do it very well indeed. “Distant Street Lights” comes on a bit like Caspian, with chiming melodies suddenly exploding into furious, cymbal crashing riffage, with the track finishing just as abruptly as it began. ”Fractures” is more reminiscent of This Will Destroy You, and, dare I be lazy and say it, Explosions in the Sky, as it builds gently before turning on the distortion pedals for it’s finale, waltzing it’s way along the post-rock track with subtle piano workings thrown in for good measure.
Erased Tapes seem to be really excited about Codes in the Clouds, and upon hearing “Distant Street Lights” I was drawn in like the proverbial moth to the flame, while “Fractures” fuelled my appetite for more, and while a pretty white vinyl might look good, it’s an album we really want.
