Kuala Lumpur Post-Harmonic Quintet, known simply as KLPHQ to friends and family, is the best thing coming out of Malaysia. The only problem is, well, they're not actually coming out of Malaysia! The band's been content to cut up the local circuit in Malaysia and Singapore, creating waves so big that we've actually heard glowing reports all the way from the US. Explosions who? Pelicawhat? Yeah, KLPHQ is reported to be the next big thing. However, although the band can tout a healthy history, they've not had one proper release to their name. This quintet has a bad case of studio-itis, and so the only thing we have to go on are live tracks.
"To the People We Love" is proof that the band isn't just a cloud of hype -- no, there's some real skill and talent fueling this band. Intricate guitar lines are weaved much like The Mercury Program or Signal Hill are known for, but there's a biting intensity which gives KLPHQ's work more of a emotional feeling than their immediate peers. That's some flavorful post-rock for your mind to consume. Slowly progress into a rolling, vibrant dynamic, which continues to evolve and never really reaches the zenith that a more stagnant band would rest upon. Five minutes, gone in the blink of an eye...
Fortunately for everyone who's not planning a trip to Malaysia in the near future, KLPHQ are scheduled to begin work on their first release imminently. We can't quite say how long it will be or what it will sound like, but if their live show is anything to go by, it will be good.
