“When The Rodent Attacks…”, is a ferocious mix of metal riffage and glitching electronica, something akin to 65daysofstatic taking on Mogwai with At The Drive-In looking on. It starts with some electronica fuzz and duelling guitars, before you get a fraction of electronics leading into some melodic riffs. Just as things are about to take off, everything falls back down, and IDM drum beats are intertwined with some gentle guitar licks, as things begin to pick up pace before the finale. Or so you’d think. “When The Rodent Attacks…” has more rises and falls than your average post-rock song, but you never once see them coming. When the finale does come, it’s well worth the wait, as the drums and cymbals crash, the guitars are thrashed to death, the electronics swirl, and a trusty vocal sample is used to add even extra urgency, leaving you out of breath but wanting more.
Double Handsome Dragons, a four piece based in the UK and containing two members of Sidearm (the greatest band you’ve never heard of), have their debut self-titled EP out now on the Lost Children net label, which means it’s free, so go and treat yourself.
