White Patterns is Euphoria's sophomore album, a marked transition from the meandering, epic Eternal Gift for the Moment. Euphoria's focus is now concerned with melody and texture; layers are extracted from the fuzzy haze that characterizes much of instrumental music and each is given a distinctive, poignant quality. "Reverse" opens the album with this intent clearly laid before the audience, and the course is expertly traveled until "White Pattern," the epic finale that bridges Euphoria's past and present works. The vocal tracks now have a new life as well. Hiroyuki Morikawa's mellow tones no longer compete amongst a fury of guitar noise, but sit very calmly with the newfound melodies. By all accounts, White Patterns is a success story of a young band coming into its own in the emerging Japanese post-rock community.
